Rear axle question on notchback GTA

Hello to all, I am new to the board and I must say from all of the threads
I've been reading this is an A-1 site for third generation F-bodie car enthusiasts. I recently purchased my second bird which is an official notchback GTA, everything checked out w/car vin#, Rpo etc... what I'm wondering about this car is if the rear axle is the original or not. According to the rpo codes it should be a 3:27 posi-limited slip. I'm ok w/that. Heres the issue I've noticed, in looking at my old bird 1985 TA with WS6 suspension the rear wheels do not stick out from under the rear wheel wells. On the notchback I've noticed that the rear wheels stick out by a 1/2". The notchback has the original size GTA rims and tire size 245/50/16 so i don't think they should be sticking out. I took the wheels of today checking to see if there spacers but found none. I jacked the car up to see the axle stamps couldn't find # where they should be. The only # I could find was GM#26029188. I checked on a few other sites and found nothing regarding this #. If anybody has any ideas or info please comment. I need to figure this out cause i was planning on swapping over eibach springs, koni red shocks and 17" rims & tires from the 85 to the notchback. Thanks in advance for any info.

Car: 1989 IROC-Z
Engine: 350
Transmission: T-56
Axle/Gears: 9bolt 3.27
might have a 4thgen rearend a good way to tell is count the bolts on the rearend becuase the 3.27 rear gear only came on the 9 bolts which are harder to find than a 10bolt if its a 10bolt its not the orig rearend all 4thgens have 10bolts and they would stick out. the 10bolts arent as strong as the 9bolts but the 9bolts are hard to find parts for so it coulda broke and got swapped.

OK I'm Gonna check that out. If thats the case I'm gonna see whats under my 85 and see if it 's worth getting re-done so I can swap rear ends.

Thanks

Hey BADROCK thanks for the info. I just counted the bolts and it definately
has 10 bolts not 9. I don't know if you or another member knows but I'm wondering if the brake hardware from the 10 bolt rear end will fit on the 9 bolt rear end? I'm definately going to make the swap, don't like the wheels sticking out from the rear wells. thanks.

Is the 85 a 9bolt? the parts for those rearends are hard to find there is a site where can get parts if it ever tares up. before you swap rears see what the other cars rear gear is might be the 2.77, id say its the 3.27 tho like mine was i also have a 85 T/A and swapped the 9bolt on my 89 which was already a 9bolt but 2.77 gears. you can also get the 4thgen wheels and it wont stick out. As for the brakes im not sure didnt try my 89s rear had the updated brakes now its got the 85 brakes and the 85 has its. Doesnt stop any quicker to me. 4thgens are a little better but not much only stop quicker becuase of abs.
