question about rear ends and transmissions
question about rear ends and transmissions
I am currently restoring a 1989 Camaro RS, the car came with a stock 305/automatic tranny. The car has 69K miles on it, but it had been sitting for several years. I am having several issues and any feedback is appreciated. The car runs and drives well but the car does not have a lot power when i press on the pedal, it seems as if the car is not shifting when it should for power, if i manually put the car in 2nd it goes like hell. For normal driving it works fine, but the car definitely drives better when not in overdrive, but still not shifting for power, is there a way to change the car so it shifts faster/harder for more power. Also, I have an opportunity to purchase a posi disc rear end from an 87 Iroc, what gains will i get in driveabilty if i install this rear end over the traditional drum rear end. Also, do i need to change the booster as well as the proportioning valve. Lastly, if i give the car quick gas from startup, i get a load banging in the back of the car, but if i take off smooth, there is no sound. You can feel it, it is like something is banging around. thanks for any advice

Sounds like you got yourself a broken trans mount (very common)
As for the shifting, make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly. Once that is done and you still dont like the shifts get a shift kit.
For the rear end setup depending what you do with the car it could be a big upgrade or just a slight one. The posi will help you 'hook up' and the discs will help stop the 4000lb chunk of steel. Yes the brake system will have to be swaped over to a disc/disc system to function properly.
