I have a 1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z that I just bought. It have the original 2.73 disc POSI rear end right now in it.
What years ring and pinions will fit without modification? I know I could buy some smaller ones from previous years and adapt it, but I would like something that fit easily.
So in what cars and years would I find something for me?
Maybe you know a web site selling new ones cheap or know where I can buy used ones?
Thanks!

any 10bolt 2 series gears will work. If you want to go with some decent gears int he back, like stated above you will either have to use puprose build 3 series gears made to fit a 2 series carrier or use a shim.

I just received an offer from someone, so could you tell me if the gears he have for sale are the same thickness than mine?
Would it be easy to swap?
Here his message:
"have a set of 3.23's from a 92 RS in good shape. $50 shipped for whole assembly. I may have a set of 3.42's from an 89 2.8 5 speed car $65.00 shipped for whole assembly. i will not seperate ring gear from pumpkin, it all gets sent as a complete assembly.........."

both of those are 3 series and will NOT be a direct bolt in.
3.08 and numerically lower = 2 series
3.23 and numerically higher= 3 series
IF they send the pinion to match it shouldnt be a problem as long as the axle splines are all correct.

Oh well, I'll just have to pass then, I'm no mechanic and where I live no one is specialised in that...

If you can find the complete rear end its just a matter of a case of beer and a few day to swap the whole thing in. Nothing special or technical there.
Other than that, swapping out components requires you to do some precise shim work to get everything lined up right and if its not you will get one heck of a howl coming from the rear and chew up a set of gears in a hurry.

Some 3.23 gears are 2 series. Mine are. What ratio do you want to use? If you are ok with a set of 2 series 3.23 gears, that would be "easy". Otherwise you'd need to get a new posi unit to go with it if you wanted to go to a higher numerical ratio.
Your '89 car is on the changeover year, so you either have 26 or 28 spline axles. If you have the axle taken apart, count 'em and check.
That guys selling his gears says "will not seperate ring from pumpkin", that makes no sense.
Ask if he means "will not seperate ring gear from carrier". Then ask if the carriers are posi or not. Then count your axle splines, and see if his match. Then you'd be set with either of his that match your axle spline count.
So, to sum up, you need your axles spline count, to match the spline count on the carrier (your posi unit). Your ring and pinion don't care about the axle splines, but must be the correct series for your carrier (posi).
capisce?
