Transmission Problem
Hey guys, posting for my bro. He has an 83 z-28. It has a 700r4 automatic. What happened was tonight as we were pulling into a parking spot his transmission would not engage into park. The shifter felt loose and moved easily from Park to Reverse to Nuetral. At D and below it felt like normal. So when we got home we tried going through all the gears and after we did that we could not engage any gear. It can pretty much just slide up and down. On some gears you can hear it click but it doesnt actually engage in that gear. Any idea what the problem is? Will check the fluid level tommorow, too dark right now. Hope its not an internal problem.

If you are lucky, the shifter cable came loose at the transmission shifter shaft link. Look at the bracket and nut on the drivers side of the pan rail.

When you check the cable make sure the clip that holds the cable to the bracket at the pan is in place. The clip fell out on my '84 and I had the same problems you're describing.
I went through 3 stock replacement cables in about 3 weeks when I still had my auto. Just kept pushing the cable sleeve out of the stupid plastic mount at the shifter. - I'm sure I just got into some bad cables though(ATP, usually good parts). - Hurst ratchet fixed the issue after pulling into the track and not being able to run....

Im on my lunch break right now guys
Won't get a chance to jack the car up till tommorow morning since I work late
I found this piece in the road where I lost all the gears. Looks like it goes to the cable with the bracket that attaches to the pan. Is that the clip you are talking about bird?

The clip I was talking about looks like the clip that holds the breather element on a carbed car - kind of U shaped. That piece in the picture looks like the rubber end of the cable that the clip attaches to.
