Anyone ever swap Mopar drivetrain in 3rd gen?
Anyone ever swap Mopar drivetrain in 3rd gen?
I have nice dodge 360/727 combo that I'm considering for my 88 RS.
Anyone ever do this swap into a camaro? The searches only yield results for v10s and 440 swaps.
I'm most concerned with fitting the 727 tranny into the car. The engine bay seems large enough although I will measure accurately before starting.
Appreciate any ideas...

Why??
727 tranny is junk. The 934 is the strong one. I've seen too many broken 727's.
Same with the 360. A 340 is better. Kind of like comparing a 350 SBC to the 400 SBC. More displacment from the same size block isn't always better although I've seen some powerful 360's.
As for if anyone has done the swap, I ask again, why? When 350 SBC are cheap and easily modified, why go with something that's so different and not designed to be swapped into a third gen?
If you're going to swap in something other than a Chev engine, at least take it to some large unusual engine like a 455 BOP or a 500 Caddy.

Sounds like a fun swap. I'd do it just to tick off the F-body guys
The 727 is a pleanty strong trans. just don't neutral drop it(unless you like parts scattered all over). a 727 will match a comparably built TH400 or C6 in strength and versatility. Plus, the typically long tailshaft will mean you have a shorter driveshaft(thus stronger and with a higher critical speed)

those 727's are pretty stout pieces, i had great luck with them in my old dodge vans (ahhhhh the memories)
the 318's are also nice, never had a 340, 360's can tend to rod knock on you
i'm sure all of the weaknesses can be addressed with aftermarket work

The 727 is a strong Tranny, but it is a 3 speed if I remember right...
It is always fun to have something unique. If you do it, I would be interested in hearing how it goes. I like the old mopar muscle. Sounds like a lot more work than a SBC for sure. I think a big frustration would be linkages for the trans. It would be fun to hear a Chrysler starter motor light up a 360 under the hood of an F-body.
What is the weight comparison on the engine/trans setup? I helped my bro put together his 360, and the internal parts seemed to be about 50% larger...push rods, connecting rods...maybe I was imagining it, but it just seemed like it would be a heavier engine that a SBC.

Well the 360 came out of my old one ton Dodge van and only has 28k easy miles on it. The tranny only has 2000 miles on it. Already built for speed.
I already have the parts and not much cash so I figured innovation would create a pretty unique and stout vehicle.
The weight of both a chev. 350 and dodge 360 are 550lbs. in stock form give or take a few. I'm thinking that I'll have to cut the firewall around the bellhousing to gain the extra 3 inches needed.
If anyone has an 8.75 mopar rear end let me know...
i'm in orlando...
thanks,

the chrysler rear end i use was from a 68 or 9 dodge van , its the right width . its narrow by like 1/4 or 5/15 overall so you dont have to shorten the tubes and get new axles.

Re: Anyone ever swap Mopar drivetrain in 3rd gen?
Did you ever complete this swap? I've got a 318 mildly built and a 904 thats beefed up and an on a "college" budget and am planning on this swap toward spring. How were the dimensions? Exhaust? exc... I know I need a truck rear pickup oil pan, making my own solid engine mounts, going to attempt headers unless you found a pair that fit. Also how did the whole linkages line up? Help from anyone is appreciated!!!

that all well and good, but the money you saved on the engine will be eaten up, and then some, by the custom work to install the engine in the car.
your in uncharted territory here, so i doubt you will find a lot of useful info on the swap. I hope you can weld and fabricate.

Several years ago there was a post about someone who put a Dodge Viper's V10 into a third gen.

There's 2 viper v10s at my school..I wish I could put one in my car so bad, lol...there is a big block with a large turbocharger on it as well, no idea what make it is though.
