I think I broke my rear end
I've had a annoying whining sound from the rear end (2.73s, posi, drums) for about a year now that only happens when I let off the gas. I posted about this awhile ago and was told it might be a pinion bearing. Well today I was driving and the whining suddenly got a whole lot louder and then turned to really loud grinding and clunking, so I pulled over. I was able to drive it home, and it seems perfectly normal still when I'm giving it gas, but as soon as I let off, it sounds like its chewing the gears to pieces.
I pretty much need the cheapest option right now, but if possible, I would like to upgrade and swap in a 3.42 or 3.23 rear end with disc brakes myself. Could anyone give me an approximate cost of finding one of these and doing the job? Or if anyone has had just the gears themselves replaced by a shop, I would like to know the cost of that also. Any suggestions for what I should do? Thanks!

You can probably swap in a used rear alot cheaper than having a new set installed mostly because of the labor.
If you get a whole rear you can put that in yourself in the driveway. since your making this post i doubt you have the skills or tools to properly install and lash a new set of gears, in which case your only option is a mechanic. can you say $cha ching$?!

I think the 'best' would be the local JY. at least that way you know exactly what the condition is without any BS.
Also it costs a few bucks to ship around a rear end so i would leave ebay for last!

I've seen a few posts for rears for sale over the last few days. They have ranged from $50 to $400. Just surf the site a little, I'm sure you'll find something.
