HELP! I think I broke my 700r4

I was installing a pass-thru digital speedometer sender on my 84 Firebird and apparently torqued it down too hard and the piece that you normally screw in the speedometer cable into broke off. I checked it and it is obviously broken, right at the edge where the threading starts.
Any way:
1. Is this a part I can replace? (without pulling the whole transmission)
2. If I had to take it to a shop, what would they have to do?
3. Any ideas as far as cost?

Thanks I am trying to install a digital cyberdyne speedometer in a stock 84 Firebird, using an "Auto meter 5291" sender.
Thanks

Also: as long as I check the fluid level, would it damage the tranny if I drove a short distance (to my parents garage).

**** Is anyone out there? *****

dont know what you mean by screwing it in, maybe if you could get me a picture, i am rebuilding my right now and i know my way around it now. if i can guess what you mean, it is the housing part, i have a electronic one, not a cable put it is still about the same, is it like a housing that is either plastic or aluminum
Dont worry others will respond, i have noticed that the board usually comes alive around 4 to 5 o clock

If you're talking about the bolt hole that's for the cable retaining clip, it's not that big a deal to fix really. If there's any threads left, you might be able to use a longer bolt to retain it. If the threads are completely gone, you'll need a new tailshaft housing. The good part is it's really easy to change out, and you can do it with the trans still in the car. There's only 4 bolts that hold the tailshaft housing on the tranny itself. You'll have to get another housing specifically from a third or fourth gen f-body because they have the mount provisions for the torque arm. None of the other gm cars use a torque arm. If you post a wanted ad on here, I'm sure one of the board members probably has one laying around in their garage. If you can figure out a way to temporarily put your original speedo piece back in, you should be able to limp it home or to a shop without losing too much fluid. Good luck!

If you can drill it and tap it larger, you can epoxy a stud in the hole. Then, put a washer and a nut on it. If the boss has cracked a bunch, welding it up and redrilling, or simply buying a new (used) tailhousing is all you need. The often sell on e-bay for $20 or so.

Thanks for all the help, but I'm not sure if I explained correctly
I was trying to install one of these:
eBay Motors: AutoMeter Hall Effect Speedometer Sending Unit #5291 (item 8048320982 end time Jul-14-06 18:39:40 PDT)
The big nut on the back side of the picture screws into where the speedometer
cable usually goes, then you reattach the cable to the near side.

When I was screwing in the adapter onto the transmission, the male threaded peice(part of the transmission) broke off and is still in my new sender.

I'll try to get some pictures this weekend, but my car is at my parents house and I'm about 50miles away. I'm getting really tired of driving my brother in laws truck so any help would be greatly appreciated.
