odd tv cable question holly 6210
I have a holly spreadbore 6210 hooked up to a 700r4. I completed the normal steps of hooking up the tv cable and settting it up correctly. The lever (lever being that peice of the linkage that its attaching) that the tv cable is now hooking up to is shorter then the origenal q-jet that i had hooked up. So the holly is not using as much cable. The transmission is now shifting at higher rpms then before. The tranny is still can use first gear, but when the tv cable was set up incorrectly on the qjet it would not shift into 1st. I am trying to figure out if my tv cable is set up the right way or not. Thx for the help

Did you adjust the cable after you hooked it all up.. and did you follow the book instructions on how to do it.. if you just hooked up the cable as it sat with the q-jet and thought it would work right it won't.. you have to adjust that bugger good lol.. It should work, just re adjust the TV cable and you should be set...

Did you add the extra little piece of linkage to the throttle lever on the carb, that you have to put on with a little screw?
If not, the only place on that carb that you can hook the TV cable to, is too close to the throttle shaft; and therefore the cable doesn't get pulled as far as it's supposed to. What happens is, either you hook it up and adjust it by the stock method, in which case it's about halfway pulled out already at idle and the trans thinks you're almost in the secondaries (sounds like that's how yours is); or, if you set it to where it's the right length at low throttle angles, it only pulls about halfway when you're at WOT, and the trans thinks you're driving like a granny when you're romping on it, and burns up from shifting too early and too soft.
It's really too bad GM decided to go back to the Stone Age mechanical TV system for that trans. With a vacuum-operated TV valve like a 350 or 400, you wouldn't be enjoying this problem. But I guess they must have figured they needed make it compatible with diesels (where no vacuum is produced, so a vacuum modulator obviously can't work), so we're stuck with that stupid non-adaptable crap.
If Holley doesn't make that linkage piece any more, you'll have to fab one up yourself. It moves the stud for the TV cable about ¾" farther from the throttle shaft, and locates it at the correct point on the arc so that it pulls the right amount at the right points of throttle operation; which I believe is about ½" rearward of straight down from the throttle shaft. Get measurements off your old Q-Jet. You might even be able to hack that part of the linkage off an old Q-Jet to get the right raw material for fabbing out of.

Well it turned out edelbrock made the linkage extender and that worked fine. But the carb got me like 5 mpg so i just threw a 600 edelbrock on there now.

The 6210 is a VASTLY superior carb to that Carter. With proper tuning, it will both outrun it AND use less fuel.
The usual cause of poor mileage in those, is the jets are too large, and the power valve is too low of a number. Especially with a stock or near-stock cam, and consequent high vacuum.
I have had those carbs, as well as their big brother the 6211 which is just like it except 800 CFM instead of 650, on every size motor from a 305 up to a 454; and they can ALWAYS be made to get good gas mileage. Easily and cheaply. And still run circles around the Carter.
