84 T5 into a 89 (had a T5)

My T5 took a dump on me (see my other post). I have been having a super hard time finding a WCT5 in my area for under $800. I've looked for several weeks but no luck. I am hesitant to buy on ebay, but may ultimately have to.

In the meantime I have located a nwc T5 out of an 84 camaro for $100 with a 2mo guaranty. I know, I know...I have read the differences of the two (nwc vs wc) on this board and would prefer to spend the $800, but i really need to get this car driving around and am willing to settle on the nwc for the short term.

One question remains. I think they are both mechanical speedos, but am not totally sure. Stock-wise are they the same? I realize someone may have switched gears previsouly, but assuming its stock would it work, without modification?

Thanks-

guess i just needed to search a little harder. I searched for a couple hrs with no luck. As soon as I posted I searched a little more and found this:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...edo+mechanical

Looks like they are just about the same. Gonna go ahead and try it...whats the worst that can happen

- good deal - For $800, I'd be looking into a T56 swap, not a WC T5 replacement.

bah- the tranny turned out to be a pos.

I keep reading about this T56 swap. But isnt it cumbersome? Some posts say its almost a direct bolt-up while others say its much more involved.

Its a good choice

It's not all that hard,
My T-56 bolted up with no problem, I got my tranny off a 1995 Camaro Z-28 with the driveshaft and pedals at a junk yard in Brownsville Texas (the southern tip of Texas closest to Mexico ) for 500.00 and a two 12 packs of Bud Light.
The Tranny bolts right up with no problem , BUT I had to use the flywheel off of that camaro, plus the clutch assembly(/YOU NEED A 1 PIECE SEAL REAR MAIN SEAL BLOCK) the crossmember and torque
arm I got from Spahn. My new crossmember lets me bolt my torque arm to the crossmember, I used the pedals off the Camaro as well and that's basically it its been in my car since 2003 and I bang the gears on street tires to hit consisntent 12.92's on motor with street 275/40ZR17's launching @ 2800rpm. I would recommend the T-56 change to anybody.

Thanks,
Eric......

Electric speedo on T-5

As far as the Speedo, My Transam is an 86 and came from the factory with a 305 4 barrel and a Borg Warner T-5 Non World Class with an electric speedo.

hope that helps some,

Thansk,
Eric.....

An opinion

I need an honest opinion just straight out, I put these rims off a 2002 Ram Air WS6 on to my car and sold my ROH Rims for these, I just need to know if the car looks alright with them on.

Thanks,

Eric....
