signs of converter going bad..

Okay.. I searched but found little if any help. Lately, I noticed that my car hesitates between gears. I start going through first gear and it shifts at the correct time but it seems like it goes into neutral for a quick second and the engine just roars (since im still holding the gas down) and THEN second gear kicks in. Theres like a brief pause between gears and then the next gear pulls up. Everything else seems to be in good working order; just got tranny service and there was no metal shavings in it and fluid never smelled burnt to begin with. All the gears work fine so I just flet like blaming my torque converter.. any ideas??

I am having the EXACT same problem with my tranny. I will just be cruising and if I get into it a little bit or go WOT, it will climb up the RPM's normally and around 3500-4000 its like it shifts to nuetral. Then my engine goes WHAAAA (hehe thats my sound for reving but not going anywhere) and then shifts into the next gear. Please note that it doesn't do it if I am normally cruising. I hope we can get an answer to this problem, I need it!

Sounds like it's slipping - which means rebuild time. Slipping is caused by other things besides burnt clutches (which causes the burnt fluid smell). You can usually have it pressure tested at a tranny shop for like $50 fee to verify before dropping bucks on a rebuild - they test the line pressures during gear shifts.

Sounds like slipping to me as well.

Have you both done a fluid change and properly adjusted the TV cable to spec?

Worth a shot before you call it done.

Converter failure is usually excessive rpm at all times, like lock up switch gone bad or the vehicle has no stall left or it keeps getting lower every time u drive the car. Mine would brake torque at 1100 rpm when my converter went bye bye :-)

yeah that does sound like clutch packs wear or low pressure

lots of wear

old

check the fluid, look at it, smell it

if its dark and not bright, and smells like anything other than nice tranny fluid then you better pull the pan and inspect for metal flakes any size at all

and for excess clutch disc pack material

will be silvery black/gray stuff in pan, coated

lots of mileage past due for rebuild,

good luck

well.. i had my tranny serviced around 2 months ago and there were no metal flakes or any kind of debri in the pan but the reason I serviced it was because one day I was on my way to school and the car wouldnt shift out of first.. then my dad drove it really hard and kinda knocked it out of it and it shifted normally. After that it started doing what Im describing.. the slipping.
