700-R4 Help Please!!!

Hello all,
I have a 700-R4 that will not shift. Reverse works, I adjusted the TV Cable, full of ATF, The transmission has been beefed up about 2 years ago. The transmission worked great yesterday, I get up this morning and put in drive and I start moving but it will not shift up. I drop into first and it moves then put into 2nd and it seems to shift but its not a hard shift like I am use to, then I can put it back into first and it drops. I am very confussed about this.. please help any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

If the 1-2 shift is getting weaker/sloppier/slips then your 2-4 band might be going out. It is pretty common, and if the trans was rebuilt to have a hard 1-2 shift it will wear the 2-4 band out quicker.

Will not shift? Does that mean it will enter DRIVE, but remain in 1st, or that there is no DRIVE at all?

I can enter Drive but will not up shift to 2nd. Always stays in first. Going to remove the valve body assembly and do a visual inspection.

2-4 band. Try flooring it, then letting off so you have enough MPH to get directly into third. If it goes into third, but will not continue into fourth then you know its the 2-4 band forsure.

Please help so I can find is home and get my tranny back together and to shop, I should have never tried to fix this...

I found where the check ball went, it was for the TV Cable. However my question is now, when I look up the cable to TV valve mechanism, the part that pushed the check valve is (like a needle) is always pushing the check ball. The springs are good, just doesn’t look right with the part pushing the check ball, I adjusted the TV Cable but it just doesn’t seem right, unless once I add fluid and the check ball will push the spring. Any ideas or comments??

Band might be worn out. Also inspect servo and governor.

sounds like a band to me.

as far as the plastic ball not seating, don't worry about it. i leave it out of every 700 i build. all it is for is to make sure the cable is hooked up properly. if the cable isn't hooked up, the ball seats and doesn't let the tranny upshift. if the ball isn't seating, it isn't your problem.

It turns out to be 2/4 band, I really dont understand how it could break while just sitting in my drive way!!.... I drove it home on the HWY for 25 miles, then next day it wouldnt up shift to 2nd. I am so confussed. but poo poo happens. I can rebuild a motor, but a tranny is out of my league!!

If you lost 2-3-4 all at once, it is most likely the governor gear, stripped or broken. If you were to floor it, the transmission should still shift at WOT to 2nd gear, but as soon as you let off of the throttle, and start slowing down it will go right back to first gear, this is because the governor is not spinning. That happens often, stripped or broken governor gear. The 2nd (other) reason is a "stuck" throttle valve in the WOT position, and or the TV cable has frozen up, most likely the governor gear.
