Can it take it?
Im currently swappin a 383 in for the 305. Ive had a few people comment they dont think the stock t-5 will take it. I was planning on going back with around a stage 2 clutch. what else should i look at if there is a problem of the tanny taking the power. Im sure first thing everyone is going to say is t-56 and i plan on it but thats going to be a little farther down the road, maybe a year or 2 at most. So if i can get that from the t-5 its all good.
The T5 is internally weak. It will break very quickly behind a 383. They break with stock 350 engines, let alone a 383. The internals will either break and need a rebuild, or break and not be rebuildable.
in a word, no. It'll take some of it, but much hard driving and you'll have pieces. They're only rated for like 245-300ftlbs(assuming world class t5). - this is why they never came factory behind the TPI 350's. - If it's a non-wc, then it isn't even rated for that much.
I broke 3 wc's. - at the time I was getting them for free. I broke all of mine in 3rd gear, which is the most comon. Third is in the center of the shaft/cluster, thus has less leverage against deflect, which is caused by the helical gears. They want to push away from each other, and if/when they do...BOOM. - Suspension is a key factor. My car hooks hard, which can actually be better. It's harder on initial launch, but by not breaking traction(wheel hop, etc..) there's no "shock load" - where the motor gets up even higher and the trans is loading and un-loading.
T5 upgrades are available, but to an extent, they are a waste of money because the case will still be a weak link. Best thing I can tell ya is to avoid excess clutch dumps/ etc that cause shock. Save your lunch money for a better trans....
