700r4 broke

my 700r4 trany in my 51 chevy pickup quit working today,i was accellerating rather hard in secound gear maybe 3/4 throttle, and it went away. no noise, it will only move when i really rev it up. fluid looks good. Is it the trany or converter, any suggestions would be great. It has 2000 miles on it with 40 - 50 1/4 mile passes, i have 500 hp is that just to much hp for a built 700r4? THANK YOU.

haa, I can buy one, with a warranty from a company that will back it up, rated for 700hp. - PATC(raptor) - they say they'll have one rated for 1000 buy the end of the year.
I've got one of mine, built with their parts, standing behind a 575hp 454 in truck that carries the front end through low gear.

- back to topic......hummmm. I'd check to make sure the TV valve isn't stuck or that the governor isn't stuck first, then post back and I'll try to help from there. If there was absolutely no warning I'd bet on a a stuck valve before I'd lay her down to rest.....

Same thing happened to my brother's 72 Nova with a 700r4. Took the tranny out and found thousands of peices of torque converter everywhere. the transmission doesn't totally go out, it just feels like you have a 4500 stall. I'd bet its the torque converter.

3rdgenZ - doesn't sound like you have much to say.....

51chevy - let us know what they say. - I just had another thought. A buddy of mine had the 4l60E go out in his 02 suburban. He decided to buy a new replacement from GM. Came COMPLETE, trans, converter, fluid, dipstick tube, sensors, etc in a case(pretty cool deal). - It lasted a week, left his wife waiting for a tow. Full Gm warranty so chevy dealer has it towed, tears it down...low and behold, someone forgot to put a snap ring on the roller sprag assembly.............

find out how much it costs to tear down and rebuild without parts.

shop that around

buy all the parts yourself and get the hardcore stuff.

I forget all the parts I got but for about 600 w/convertor and rebuild I have a Bad A tranny.

- just from what you said and you're little angry man smily face was joking that you might rather thump him than talk....

- I don't argue that most shops can't build a 700r to take more than about 450hp. Most can't...from what I've been around, few can. Those that know what they're doing with a 700r can make it take quiet a bit. - The problem is that most trans shops try to upgrade them according to the ways you upgrade T350's and T400's. It doesn't work that way, 700r's are a whole new ball game.

That is what the guy said also. he also said that you can build it to hold the power, but the disign is bad, so they burn up quickly.so far ive been though 2 and am on my 3rd, so i must agree with him.

The monster shell isn't much. The torque drive kit and the 5 pinion planetaries are when you start getting serious. Then you start changing to aftermarket hard parts so that you can go to full roller thrust bearings through out, instead of the plastic and brass shims/wear plates. Vette servos are for stock rebuilds, a performance trans should always have billet.

What servos are you running? - Sounds to me like he's running the thin steals and as many clutch packs as he can(works for t350/t400, not for a 700r)thus, they burn out since the steals can't dissipate enough heat.
- I've got one in a 4x4 tahoe, 355TPI with ported vortec heads and a mild cam. Pulling 33" tires through a 3.73 gear(often pulling a loaded car trailer in OD) it's already got over 20k on it, still shifts and pulls as hard as mile 1. Dans87GTA went 2 years on a rebuild with a beast reaction shell and vette servo. His vb and accum springs were set for constant kill on shifts in a mid 13 sec daily driver. It took out the rear planetary and sun gear, clutches and everything else were still like new. It's now going back together with the 5 pinion planet and billet intermediate servo and a slightly milder part throttle shift, with the same WOT neck breaker.

They can be built to take up to 700hp continously.

It sounds like my trany is fine and the convertor took a crap, my truck runs 11's and the trany is still good.

good deal, as long as it didn't spit to much trash in the trans or it got pulled down and cleaned out.

3rdgenZ - mid 13's and already though 2? Somethings not being done right. - The thick kolene steals are a must have for the 3-4 clutch pack to survive. The most clutches you can run with them is 8, and the only way you get to 8 with the thick steals is with a particular selectable backing plate, and the short 3-4 apply fingers. A good carbon fiber band and the billet intermediate servo are also a big help. - I don't get to worried about the OD servo in a sports car, but in 4x4's and tow vehicles the billet is a must.

I took out a dayco 2800 with a mild 350(350-375hp) in less than an oil change. - The cheapies won't last. Viglante, Yank, Edge, PATC. They're expensive, but a lot cheaper than buying again and re-rebuilding a trans due to trash pumping through. PATC has good converters for reasonable pricing.
