1986 Camaro-STUCK IN REVERSE!

I just recently aquired a 1986 chevrolet camaro/ 5.0 Liter V8 Engine/ Automatic Transmission. I'm not sure but I think the transmission is a TH700R4 because I have Overdrive and I was told that's a popular transmission for this year car.

When I first bought the car there were several problems with the fuel gauge, Internal and external lighting, dirty oil, and a missing air cleaner and brittle vaccum hoses.

I have visited the junk yard on a few occasions and I put an air cleaner on the car following a cheap *** Haynes manual. The car smokes less and was running better, burning less gas. I was driving it to take my girlfriend to get sushi the other day and we came back to my house. The car sat for a few hours parked outisde then I was going to leave my house when I noticed the car was stuck in reverse no matter what I shifted it into. My car also makes a ticking sound when I turn the ignition on before starting the engine.

I read up on the problem and from what I read there are 4 things I can adjust or mess around with.

The Neutral switch was my first guess so I opened up the pannel on the shifter and found my neutral switch was missing the little pin inside for adjusting. I replaced the neutral switch and adjusted it and I was still stuck in reverse. So then I figured I may be low on oil...I checked the oil and found it was black and burnt and I was told I may have metal deposits in the transmission wearing down all the internal parts.

I read that it is possible my torque converter is bad.

Before that though I read several times that a broken shift linkage will cause it to stay in reverse but I checked the linkage under the drivers side of the car and noticed it was in one piece. I had my father shift the shifter into neutral reverse and drive and 1st and 2nd gear and I noticed the linkage moves. When in drive it gets tight. I noticed that a bracket had fallen off as well.

I read that I have to put the car in neutral at the shifter then adjust the linkage at the transmission under the drivers side of the car to neutral as well.
I am not sure how to do this.

I also checked the TV cable because the person I bought the car from had a new carburetor installed by a mechanic and the TV cable was set so that it was slipped all the way out away from the carburetor so I adjusted it according to the Haynes Manual.

The Throttle Valve cable is attached to the shifter and the carburetor and to the throttle lever and bracket assembly on the transmission.
It says I can only adjust it at the carburetor. Does anyone know of an adjustment on the transmission as well? or does anyone know if it could be snapped?

When I start the engine and shift the shifter I watched the Tv cable at the carburetor and noticed it doesn't move, not even when I give it gas?
It doesn't seem to throttle at all.

Should my shift linkage be tight without slack in the neutral position? or in drive? or should there be no slack? Mine has a good ammount of slack in it in park and it's tight in drive.

someone help me here =)
