Gearing Question

Ok, I feel a little foolish about asking this question, but here goes. What gears are the best well rounded performers. I currently have the 2.73's in my 92 RS but I'm looking for better performance when I do my injection swap and tranny build up. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Most people like 3.73's, I had em for a while. I didn't like them. It all depends on your powerband. My powerband is so low that I had to shift 3 times before I even got to 70mph. I wouldn't use 3.73 or higher without a lockup converter for the highway. For a stock motor, the torque multiplication you get from lower gears helps you get off the line, but thats about it. After I broke the pinion of my 3.73's I stepped down to 3.23's and they're perfect for my engine. Also, I think the engine power plays a role in which way to lean when choosing a gear ratio.

The best gear ratio has been debated at length and I've learned that its largely a matter of personal preference for cases like yours. You have to decide what you want to optimize the car for. Drag racing(3.42), city/street(3.73), highway(2.73), or a combination(3.23). In drag racing you want to choose a gear that will leave you in your powerband in drive (3rd) when you cross the finish line. If you just want to street race to the speed limit, go with the 3.73's. You'll take em off the line, but they may catch up later. Don't forget a posi, its a waste of time without one.

I've run both 3.42's and currently 3.23's, and both of them are great all around gears to run with a 700r4. My 2.73's sucked hands down! I wouldn't recommend 3.73's either unless you're strictly drag racing or swapping a T56 6-speed trans in. Just my .
