700r4 problems...

my symptons are: while under throttle, between shifts theres about 1 full second of rev b4 the higher gear is engaged. also, the day i concluded shes non-driveable there was alot of throttle and no go; with the occasional +4000rpm/30-40mph movement under light throttle; at idle (in any gear) theres a distinct buzzing coming from the case itself. tranny fluid still has a little color and doesnt smell burnt; for last ~10k miles the vss (24) code has thrown my ses light a few times per week (i was told not worry about it. mistake? i think so.) my question now is WTF? lol. plz help.

ps. 89rs lo3 has a 700r4 and not the 4l60 right? (friend brought this question to my mind)

to answer your first question....the tranny is done.. its time for a rebuild. it seems to be slipping and when it comes to trannys there not really back yard fixable....unless your really feel like an adventure... now i dont know now much racing you do but if it was me i would save up and take it to a very reputable tranny shop. trannys are very complex to the average person. now when it comes to your friends car...check the firebird camero data on this site...it should tell you

A 700R4 and a 4L60 is the same tranny but with a different name. GM changed the name in 1990. This is not to be confused with the 4L60E, which the 94 and newer f-bodies got.

thanks. i was aware the difference in the 4l60 and the 4l60e; just not the difference in the 700r4 and 4l60. thanks.

it took a while but we finally got hte chance to drop my tranny. not too many problems. one thing that has me worried is a 2-wire plug that wasnt in use. my searchs have made me conclude that a) this wire would go to to my vss (however i have a cable-driven speedo; maybe the wire's there and was used on a different yr model); or b) it goes to something completely diff and i shouldnt worry.
what do u think?

I know this is an old thread but it is my problem also. I am wondering if anyone has any more info on dans last post. I too have a 700r4 with a speedometer cable and a 2 wire plug not in use on my 89 camaro. i have some intermittent stalling problems when i shift from park to reverse or drive. occassinaly the computer can not catch the idle and it drops too low and stalls. from my reading i have learned that this can be caused by no VSS however my speedo works fine (not sure about the cruise i haven't had a chance to check it). my haynes manual says that pre 85 f bodies have a vss integrated into the cluster and the 85 and later models have them integrated into the tailshaft of the trans. i wonder if this has anything to do with my occasional stalling.
