Rear end question.. (Stupid one)

On the type of rears that come in 89 Camaros, is it possible to just bolt in a posi unit, like you do on Chyrslers??? I tried to search, but am not putting the search in right...What is involed in converting an open rear to limited slip....Thank you very much for any help on this issue...Tom

It depends on the rear end gears that you have or want. There is a two series carrier for 3.08and lower and a 3 series carrier for 3.23 and higher. If you have the correct carrier for your ring gear and pinion you can put in a posi with the proper set up and no probs. I have a 2002 carrier in my 91 rs, I am running 3.73 gears

yes you can just swap carriers, like on any other makers rears. with the 89 there's a good chance you'll end up swapping axles too to go to 28 spline from 26 to match the new carrier.

Most likely you have the 7.625" 10-bolt GM Corporate rear end. This rear is similar in design to a Dana rear that you might have seen in Chryslers before. The major difference is that the shims for the backlash go on the ends of the carrier races, not under the bearings like in a Dana. The rear is easy to identify because it will have 10 bolts holding the cover on. These rears are fairly easy to work on, but not very strong. If you want to lay down some power I'd highly suggest a girdle style cover like the ones sold by TA Performance. I'd also suggest going with an aftermarket posi unit, like an Eaton. These are stronger than the OEM units, and they are getting hard to find for cheap (it's been five years since the last F-body rolled off the line after all). Definately upgrade to 28 spline axels if you're switching the differential.
