Gear oil that also smells like burnt clutches! I'm just about to drop out the center section in the 9" to rebuild the trac lock posi. Last time I was up at the drag strip, the guys failed to line me up in the waterbox properly or they didn't have enough water in it. Result, 1 tire fire and a smoked clutch pack, this happened twice. After the second time I loaded the car on the trailer and went home. It was so bad that even on the street it was switching from side to side. Bleh, back to the mess.

Whew, the center section is back in the car. Just have to fill it, put the torque arm back on, slip the axles in and put the driveshaft back in. Compared to the first time I did this a couple years ago, this went a hell of a lot faster

Glad to hear it went easier.

How are you hooking the torque arm up to the 9"? Did you buy a 3rd member with bosses cast in?

Thanks in advance.

I bought a 9" housing from Currie including axles, brakes and the torque arm bracket. Basicly everything minus the 3rd member which I got local.

indeed, thanks evil! I didn't know the torque arm bracket technically bolted onto the housing.. Interesting.

How did you fix this? rebuild the posi unit with new clutches? how much do those cost, and are they easy to do without weird special equipment, such as a press? *shrug* no idea how they're done so...

and yea, gear oil is the only thing on my car I just can't stand the smell off...

Basicly you take the two halfs apart on the trac loc posi. Remove the posi from the 3rd member, mark and remove the ring gear, remove 2 screws that help hold the two halfs together in assembly, remove one side gear that's just sitting there, turn the clutch side upside down to dump the old clutches and steels out.

Let the new clutches soak in the posi additive for a while before putting them in. Putting it back together is a little harder so I use 3 clamps and a small deadblow hammer to seat the two halves back together then tighten down the two screws. Also during this, the axle is in to line up the splines on the clutch hat and side gear. Flip it over and put on the ring gear and torque everything to spec. Put it back in like it was and you're done The only tools needed are some sockets, torque wrench, standard and phillips screwdrivers, clamps plus a big and small plastic ended dead blow hammers. This is if everything is in great shape and you don't change anything else out.

Here's the posi unit, clutches are on the bottom half.

And here's a rebuild kit for the posi, got mine on ebay for 58 bucks total.

Regular gear lube smells fairly bad, but burnt gear lube is enough to make you hurl! A buddy of mine majorly overheated the bearings and gears in his Jeep rearend, and you could smell it down the street with a decent wind blowing! Gear lube doesn't really bother me too bad, but this smelled bad enough to make me gag. His dogs wouldn't even go near it when the rear cover was off. Lol.
