Transmission Mount

I have a 1988 IROC, 5.7 Auto. I believe the transmission mount is broken by the clunk I get when working the gas. Please provide steps to replacing this. Thanks

if its the mount, its a piece of cake. jack up the trans with a small bottle jack or something, dont jack right on the pan, put a piece of wood or something to distribute the load a bit, remove the one or two bolts that hold the mount to the crosmember, then remove the 2 bolts that hold the mount to the trans, the mount should come right off and reverse the directions to re-assemble. the trans case is aluminum so dont go crazy of the bolts or you could strip them. torque them to factory specs.

Would it be better to access this by jacking up the rear and putting the car on jack stands or driving the car up on ramps to bring up the fron to replace this mount ?

Also, I would imagine if the mount is broken this should be pretty easy to see - correct ? Thanks for all of your help

Personal pref. is to drive rear end of the car up on ramps for access to the trans area. How you approach it, is up to you.

Chances are the trans mount rubber cushion will have cracks, those will probably be visual. The trans mount can be checked by inserting a pry bar against the trans support brace and gently lifting against the trans. If the trans moves around, suspect that the trans mount rubber cushion is shot.
Replacement is straight forward as 86 TA describes.
