gear questions
i have a stock 10 bolt in my 1984 ta not sure what the specs are on it at all.
i planning a engine trany swap a 400 to 450 hp 350 and a th350 with a b and m shift kit with a 3000 stall. what would be a good rear gear combo for my set up im wanting someting that is good on the highway as well as give me good et's at the strip. would a 3.73 be a good set up or a 3.42 4.10 or a 4.56 im new to all this i know the lower the gearing the better the gas mileage but also the higher the gear the worse it is on the hightway. also is changing the rear gearing easy to do in a 10 bolt or is that something i should have a shop do.
thank you guys for all your imput and helping a noob like me.

i would have to say 3.73s also.. you will get decent gas mileage and great performance.. 3.73s will get you higher into your power range versus the 3.42s.. and you say you are a noob to this stuff, so i would just take the gears to a shop.. dont try to mess around with it.. also, if you really are going to get anywhere near 450hp, get an aluminum girdle-type rearend cover.. and dont plan on running slicks with your 10 bolt either..

If you go to a higher "numerical" gear ratio, like 4.10s or 4.56, you'll be redlining on the highway keeping up to a civic. Acceleration will be awesome, but mileage will be horrible. You basically can't drive it on the highway, if you ever try to pass anyone you'll hit your redline by the time you get by them.
My 3.23's hit 5000RPM if I want to REALLY pass someone, and that's beyond my comfort level for "normal" driving.
I would go to 3.42 gears personally, unless you're going to a taller tire. Assuming the stock tire height, that's a nice gear ratio. You won't need the gear multiplication if you've got 400HP, and a 3000 RPM stall, unless the motor is a VERY CAMMY 305 or something.
You'll lose a tenth or two on the strip, but that's easily made up for with the 95% of street driving it'll see.
