Are you asking if a 5 speed from a TBI car is the same as one from a TPI car? yes, all V-8 5 speeds from these cares are the "same" in that they have the same bolt patter, input shaft, and output shaft.

also, please don't use CAPS. Its poor internet etiquette.

No your TBI T-5 is not the same as the high-perf ones.

You have the super-stupid CAFE sacrificial lamb 5th gear ratio, designed to give the highest possible highway mileage figure in the govt test for that, regardless of any other consequences. Your 5th is .63.

The high-perf cars (TPI, L69) got the better .73 5th gear. A far more useful ratio, where it doesn't always seem like there's a gear missing between 4th and 5th, especially when you want to go up a hill at about 55-60 mph.

Other than that, it's the same.

Oh, good info. I'd rather have the .63 5th gear, i drive 100miles a day!

I can always downshift if i need to pass or go uphill.

You don't want the .63 5th. Believe that.

If you had a .63 6th, and a .8 or so 5th, then it would be great. Problem is, with only one gear change that's that big of a step, you go from "lug" in 5th, to "scream" in 4th. It's too big of a step. All it's good for is doctoring up the CAFE tests back when these cars were new, where all they did was to test the car according to the "prescribed" driving schedule; it had NOTHING to do with practicality or any other real-world concerns.

I had the .73 5th in my car (83 L69) for 20 years. Being the L69 setup, it also has 3.73 rear gears. Sometimes I drove it 200 to 300 miles a day for my work. It wasn't a problem.

I screwed up once and didn't pay close enough attention to a core I was using to rebuild my T-5 some one of the countless times I rebuilt it, and accidentally put a .63 5th in it. I COULD NOT STAND IT. I couldn't WAIT to rip that thing back out of my car and put the right one back in it. I think actually I did it the very next weekend, it sucked SO BAD I had to get rid of it.
