The trans in my 85 Z28 has pooped itself. It runs OK in 1st and 2nd [and has reverse] but when it should go into 3rd it completely loses drive and revs out.
The 1st time it did it I revved it a couple of times but it just totally slipped and poured heaps of smoke into the cabin. It happened after I was checking the torque converter for slippage – I’ve got a manual lock up switch in the car and if you lock the TC in 4th then step on the gas, it feels like its slipping or grabbing and releasing.
Anyway, yesterday I tested it again to see if it was still doing it and it was. But after the next set of lights I took off and had no 3rd.
I guess its rebuild time but I’m just curious about what I’ve killed. Any clues anyone? Fluid level is fine, colour of the fluid is good, it doesn’t smell burnt, TV adjustment is good…

 

Same happened to me 9 months or so ago, I had it rebuilt and its fine, my tranny guy showed the clutched to me, they were fried.

 

sopunds like the 3-4 clutch pack is toast. does it still back up? Make sure the guys who goes through it puts a good sun gear shell in it. I would also use the new style input sprag with the extra elements....
