700R4 no 3/4 shift

First off this board is awesome......wish I found it long ago.

My 86 305 TPI has seen a ton of action but has been faithful short of age and wear and tear.....so despite countless 1000's of "is it dead yet?" questions, I am keeping it alive as long as it will (the 305 will live forever ).

I have had problems with the tranny though...one rebuild (double A *beep-beep* S-S HOLES) and a junker which I now have in the car.

The car moves, shifts fine (for stock setup) but had an instantanous malfunction and it won't make the 2 - 3 shift or OD (4th).

1st is brisk, shifts into 2nd without problem (chirps at high RPM into 2nd as well) and the 2nd to third never happens....it loses gear and revs in neutral unengaged if in D or OD.

I shift into 2 or 1 and don't have this prob obviously....but D or OD I will.

(I write this like I know absolutely nothing because I want the right answer if anyone can give it....so thanks)

My question is.....short of an entire rebuild, which I plan on doing anyways......is there a fix that sounds like it would be the tonic I need?

Valve (2-3) or the valve body or a clog or is it electrical or pressure related?

The tranny seems like it's in solid form but malfunctioning.

Any thoughts?

(Again....I fear the tranny work and want to research this up and down and sideways befaore I try the rebuild)

The 3-4 clutch is a weak point in these units. The transmission will have to be torn down to fix this. If the unit has low miles, you might get away not having to replace much.

The smart thing to do is doing the rebuild kit I purchased though, right? The clutches are included and they are higher pressure than stock (more durable I read with harder shifts) so that's that there for the weak point, I guess....

Ever hear of doing clutches w/o removal of the tranny by chance or am I just sounding lazy?

Well, I appreciate the help.....

this is a stupid question, but always bears asking, when you put that trans in, did you adjust the TV cable properly?

I didn't install it....I did, however, correct it a bit(to the best of my knowledge....fine tunes and got it right driving approx two miles total).

I had someone toy with the TV the first tranny and had it corrected that week...no damage but a newfound respect for that damned tab.

Like I said, I believe the junk yard tranny (which was fresh in the lot from a car the day before that just got totaled) ran fine.....just a sudden and complete loss of gears 3&4.

I don't rule our the TV pressure may have been off, but I think the clutch particles I found in the pan make sense.

Depending upon how the vehicle was totaled, it will take out the 3/4 clutch packs. If the trans was in 3 or 4th and the vehicle slows suddenly, the gas pedal goes to the floor and the 3/4 clutch packs turn into smoke.
