How much work is involved with 3.42 gear swap?
I decided for my first mod, which should be coming up in a month would be new gears and a shift kit.
After research and help from you guys I chose a transgo for my 700-R4, and I chose 3.42s over 3.73s....
So I never found my rpo code, and I had a friend (devestator X) start to help me...
I counted 9 bolts... I'm pretty sure I have 9, could be 10, but I counted 9 from laying on the street...
He also needed my speed at 1500 rpms... I still have yet to do this, due to the winter...
and wheel height or something....
So would my mechanic just swap out the gears and put in my shiftkit? Or is there something I'm missing and I would have to buy more parts to change something....
And does anyone know how much a fair labor cost would be, so I would know if I am getting ripped off for future reference...
-Thanks

....na, don't mind helpin' at all. The reason you couldn't find 9 bolt gears under the search is because they're numerically different. 9 bolts are 2.77 - 3.27 - 3.45 & 3.70, instead of 2.73 -3.08 -3.23 - 3.42 - and 3.73 like 10 and 12 bolt rears.
Here's the hook -up !

so would it be better to go with a 10 bolt rear?
How much are they, and how much work is envolved?

Count again. A '92 f-body came with a 10-bolt rear end. And a 305 TPI with an automatic came with a 2.73 gear and a 2-series posi carrier. A 9-bolt rear will also have a rubber drain plug in the cover; a 10-bolt will not.

If your going to be swapping gears in the rearend then chances are your planning on driving it harder and so I would at least recommend replacing the bearings and a solid spacer like what ede was sayin. Maybe a rear cover girdle would help as well. Of course you could always have them install the gears and bearing and then at a later date add the girdle and such.
From a cost standpoint, it'd be way cheaper to locate a third or fourth gen rear that already has the ratio you're after. You can usually score one with posi and disc brakes for around $200-$350. To upgrade your original rearend, you're looking at about $200 for new gears, about $100 for the install kit (bearings, shims, crush sleeve, etc.), and usually about $200-$250 in labor for a shop to install them. If you have to buy a new posi carrier, add on another $150-$450 depending on which one you choose. If you're not totally set on having posi and disc brakes, there's tons of 6 cylinder cars in the junkyards with 3.23 and 3.42 ratios stock. Just my .02.

I swapped my 2.73s for 3.42s on my 91 GTA last year and it is the best mod I've done to date. I could barely spin my tires in 1st, now I can squawk them most of the way through 1st and also into 2nd (I have a shift kit too though). You have to change your drive and driven gear too so your speedo is correct. If you're going to add a shift kit, I'd get a TransGo, 0.500" boost valve and Corvette servo.
