What does the 2 and the 1 mean, on my selector..

You know after D or [D], I can't remember which comes first or w/e...

My parent's cavy has them too, and my dad says they are for snow driving...

So what are they used for exactly?

Throw it into 1 when you want to pass another car on the highway.
DO NOT THROW IT IN A LOWER GEAR ON THE HIGHWAY!

Sarcastic advise is wrong. Advise that could injure others will not be tolerated.

who told you first for passing on the highway. if i go over 30mph in fist its ineffective. that why your auto tranny switches gears between 20 and 30. its a quick gear and if you need to stop quickly from high speed and dont really mind getting a new tranny sooner than you should you can drop down to 2 or 1 from overdrive. other than that its point less to use then on any auto, unless you want to govern your speed because there a cop behind you or something stupid. it doesnt make sense to slap shift from 1 to 2 then overdrive like few ppl do. your car is disigned to do that for you and jumping through drive to overdrive is only gonna make your car feel weird and drop your speed while the tranny try to figure out where it should be.

pretty much dont worry about using them.

its only my experience that you cant go faster than 30 in first and unless your joking id like to see someone try that 1st gear highway pass in any car other than mine cuz i dont believe it would ever work.

If you select 1 the car will stay in first.

If you select 2 the car will still start out in first and then only up shift to second.

If you select 3 or D it will goes through first, second, third.

If you select the boxed D (boxed D signifies OD) it will go through the whole range 1, 2, 3 and then into overdrive. Overdrive is when the engine is at a
1:1 ratio with the tranny for maximum fuel economy, but makes the engine have a sluggish response.

3rd gear is a 1:1 ratio, and thats not OD.

Overdrive is exactly what the word says... the driveshaft is spinning faster than the engine is. An overdrive gear (4th) is a ratio smaller than 1:1. IICR, a 700R4 has a .73:1 ratio for its OD gear.

Right on target... I'll go ahead and include that when your torque converter lockup clutch is engaged (as it commonly is while cruising in 4th gear and other conditions), you are achieving that 1:1 ratio between the engine (flexplate) and the transmission (input shaft). With the TCC (torque converter clutch) engaged and the transmission in 4th gear (700r4), then you have your 0.70:1 (don't think it's .73:1 not that it really matters) ratio between the engine and the driveshaft.

You can leave it in overdrive in town... The difference between having the shifter in drive and overdrive is two-fold... Obviously, the first primary difference if you have the shifter in D (3rd), is that you will stay in 3rd gear instead of shifting to 4th... The second difference is that the overrun clutch is applied when the shifter is not in OD. This means that you will get engine braking while decelerating.

I usually leave it in overdrive unless I feel like some spirited driving...

On my 700R4 I use 2 & 1 for engine braking, and racing cause I can strech the gears a little better than the tranny does and I get better ETs. in D ot [D] the Tranny shifts too low for my driving style

Pretend your automatic is a manual for a second...

1 = 1
2 = 2
3 = d
4 = OD

If you have a certain gear selected, it will shift up to, but not over, that gear.

For highway driving ALWAYS drive in overdrive...unless you want to be running very high RPMs...and high tranny temps and such. Oh, and it will drink gas too

Around town, its always in drive (3rd). 50 mph or higher (Highway) is Over Drive (4th), shifting back to drive (3rd) on the off ramp. Thats it.
