What did I break?

1991 700r4 behind a 305 tpi, 95k on it. It doesn't want to shift out of 2nd. 1st gear seems fine. It will shift into 2nd, but leave it at light throttle and it jumps into neutral. You have to rev it to above 3k and then it shifts back into 2nd.

Time for a new tranny?

that would be the clutch packs, i think. the same thing happened to mine this past summer. it needed an entire rebuild.

There is a band inside that runs off of a servo, it slows down the drum and in turn makes the first to second gear shift, sounds like either your band is worn out or the drum it rides on is wore out or broken, either way your gonna have to pull the tranny to fix it. If its not that u have valves sticking in your valve body, but I don't think that would make it shift into nuetral, sounds like internal problems, like clutch packs or one of the shift bands and or drums
