Well, the road racer project begins. I'm trying to figure out what rear end to use. The RS has a 2.73 in it right now, thats being pulled. I'm looking for 3.42 rear gears, that can handle up to 400hp and 400 torque. Anybody know a GM rear that i could go looking for in the local yards that will fit up to the RS with those requirements (I know its a tall order, but i dont have 2 grand for a new rear, budget build and all). I am in the exact same position as you are.... I have been trying to find out how much a stock 9 bolt rear can hold cause till i can afford a 12 bolt or 9" i would like to get rid of my peg leg non posi rear. Apparently people have built up 10 bolts to hold some good power but i have had bad luck in the past with them.

 

I'm running an 8.2 in my nova which has a 383 and very stout at that... with no problem... I have an 8.5 though that I'm building and is going to replace the 8.2 very soon! I have has no problems though and its 30 something years old... To include shafts and gears....
