stupid VSS, corecting gears

ok i baught a 44 tooth gear for my 700R4 to correct for the 373 gears, problem is, i forgot about the VSS and that its not cable driven or so i was told when i was having it installed, so how would i correct this then? i know the transmision center or whatever but thats confusing me or can i have a chip burned to have it corrected for the gears? alot of my mustang buddys told me to do that, if so, where can i get a chip for a TBI motor?

Not too hard. You just need the right gear for your VSS.

Any stupidity you may have encountered is not in the VSS.

That would depend on the drive gear that's in the transmission. Get that info, and from there it's pretty easy to calculate the driven gears that will be the closest.

Or for that matter, in a 700, it's super easy to change out the other one too.

The driven gears will fit the cable style or the VSS style. If your old gears were 3.23 or numerically lower, you'll need to change the drive gear on the trans output shaft. 3.23 and numerically lower use a 17 tooth red gear on the output shaft, 3.42 and numerically higher ratios use the 15 tooth gray gear. Not sure exactly which driven gear you'll need, but you do need the 15 tooth drive gear for 3.73's.

ok, im completely lost, but, i had either 2.73s or 3.08s (not sure) and my tranny is out of a chevy carprice, and when I had the stock gears the speedo was still about 5 mph off.

links on where to buy?

about 5 mph off
At what speed? 5 mph off while doing 10 mph? 5 mph off at 150 mph? It makes a big difference.

Makes more sense to speak in terms of a percentage; because if you need gears, that's what it really is. The speedo is REALLY 5% off, or whatever. If it was 10% high for example, it would read 22 mph when it is really doing 20; 66 mph when really doing 60; 99 when really doing 90; etc. Of course it could also be 10% LOW, so just saying it's "off" by however much, without saying which way, is even more useless than not telling us what speed it's "5 mph off" at.

Until you know what rear gears you have and your tire radius when operating (not "I have 235/60-15 so my tires are exactly 26.12" in diameter", beacuse they're NOT), it's IMPOSSIBLE to guess what the right speedo gears would be. And since they work as a RATIO, it's impossible to know what the driven gear should be, without first knowing what the drive gear (the one on the trans output shaft) is.

Get us 3 pieces of info. One, the height of the EXACT CENTER of the wheel, from the ground, with the car sitting there, measured with a tape measure; two, your rear gear, which means, LOOK AT IT, not "guess" with a bunch of "codes" or "what gear did my car come with stock" or any of that, the ONLY valid answer is TELL US WHAT YOU SEE when you take off the cover; and three, the number of teeth on your drive gear now: observation and counting required there also. You can skip #3 if you don't mind buying both a drive gear AND a driven gear.

You can still get automatic speedo gears from any Chevy dealership. Sofa's explanation is the only way you're going to get your speedo dead nuts accurate, but if you just want it close enough, just tell the parts guy at the dealership what rearend ratio you have and maybe what size tire. They have a chart on their computer that lists the closest combinations. That's how I went about it when I went from 2.73's to 3.42's in my car, and the gears they sold me got it plenty close enough. My combo was 15/42. With 3.73's you'll probably need somewhere around 15/43 or 15/44 I would hazard to guess.

sorry, been busy and computer crashed

speedo was 5 mph over at 40 mph, i just measured the total height with a tape measure and it was 25 and 3/4 inches tall, i have a 3.73 rear end in the car. i do NOT care about it being 100% dead on accurate, but within 5 mph will be nice

BTW, not to be off topic, but the mustang guys need a chip burned for every little mod they do(or so it seems) you can't correct the vss by burning a chip in a thirdgen.
