well i live in Ma and it has been really cold lately so every morning i go start my car and let it warm up drive to work shifts great every gear no problems
go back out at lunch as i only get a half hour i cant really let it warm up for to long thats when the problem happens put the car in first take off push in the clutch to stop at the top of the driveway and instant grinding whirring noise let the clutch back out it still makes the noise only upon shifting gears will the noise go away and it will happen every time just like that never changes seems if i let the car warm up in nuetral with the clutch engaged to the flywheel the noise will never happen any ideas or suggestions? the fluid i am using is atf with half a bottle of lucas tranny fluid

Hey where in MA Are you?
Sounds to me like something to do with the syncro's but its wierd that it did it while u pushed in the clutch, If it was only while shifting it would have been alot clearer.
let someone chime in with a little bit better knowledge

Not sure about Lucas Trans. addative but I know their engine addative performs very badly in colder climates.
Our parts manager took their display model (the one that has a little hand crank hooked to a gear set) and put it in the freezer for awhile and then tried the demonstration and the Lucas addative was like molasses.
Might want to try not using Lucas or try different fluid for winter months if your problem is temperature related.

the lube called for in that gearbox is Dexron II. I don't know if I would put any additives in during the winter. I lived up north (adirondack mtns) for a long time and in weather like this down to about zero I would start my car with the clutch down and wait a min or two until the mtr had a high idle then slowly let up on the clutch till evrything spun nicely. The tranny would always pull the revs down till it was spinning for a couple minutes. It always took 5-10 min of warmup before I'd pull away and start shifting cleanly. even then it wouldn't fully warm up for 10-15miles. When I absolutely had to go with little warmup I just started the car in gear and once the idle held steady I'd ease away in 1st and stay in 1st at low speed for a ways and then try and grab 2nd. I wouldn't try rushing those syncro's, you'll just mangle them

I'd probably change the fluid to a quality brand dexron III. Try to get something without a whole bunch of junk additives.
