700R4 Vs. 2004R. Which will win??

Ok.. Havn't seen anybody try to use a 2004r. If all the 9 and 10 second grandnationals use this tranny its got to be some what good?? Right? Does anybody know the up and downs to these trannys in comparisons to each other? I Just purchased a monte ss and trannys going south. I have the old 700r4 out of my camaro to build or the 2004r?? Feedback please. Thanks!

Most people will tell you that stock, the 700 is the better unit. Heavily modified is a different matter. You won't find any 9 second GNs with the stock 200-4R. Not even many 11-second ones, for that matter.

A 700 requires a little work to get into a MC; crossmember, shorter drive shaft.

The 700 has a MUCH deeper 1st gear, but 2nd and 4th are similar. 3rd of course is 1:1 in both.

I don't see either one as a "clear winner".

The problem with the 2004R is original OE parts are getting hard to find. They have not made 2004R's since 1990, and most High Performance ones were form 1985-1987 with a couple of exceptions. There have been a lot of 2004R's in the nines over the years. Now though the 700R4/4L60E has had extensive improvements over time and there are a few in the nines (and more all the time) doing ok. The Monte Carlo 2004R is a good one to start with, I carry the parts that will help you out here. What year is the unit? and how much HP are you planning on putting out? If you need something that I do not carry I know the people that have what you will need. By the way years ago (back in the mid 1990's) three different shops made comparisons on which transmission would be quicker and which would be faster in the quarter mile. All three at the time used a 10" torque converter with 27 splines so the transmissions could be exchanged using the same torque converter, the results on average were (these were high 11's thru mid 12 second vehicles) that the 2004R was an average of 1/10th quicker, and 1 mph faster in the quarter mile. The main reason for this is the 2004R geartrain is lighter, and the gear ratios are closer. Now with all of the improvements to the 700R4/4L60E & torque converters that difference is nil, plus the 700R4/4L60E has the advantage of HD parts being readily available.

I saw a test and the 200R4 had less HP loss.
