speedo gears

i tried searching but everthing i enter comes up with no matches ...try again, so i'm guessing the search feature is down right now

anyhow i picked up a rear of a 89 5.7 transam at the junkyard, it a disc setup, with 3.27 ratio... i checked it i currently have a 2.73 pos peglegger.

i pulled the speedo gears, but i realized that the new speedo on the 89 tranam was eletric driven, not cable like mine, will the new speedo gears fit my cable driven setup? thanks in advance ...SCOTT

the drive gear will but the driven will not. you will have to get the cable equivalent. maybe even a new housing depending on tooth count.

if your car is cable driven, then you need speedo gears in the tailhousing of the trans to match with the rear end gear ratio and tire size

it doesnt matter what rear end you got..whether the car was cable or electric, it matters how your stock trans/speedometer is setup. its the rear your swappin in right? not the 89 trans am trans and speedo?

my 89 Irocz has a cable driven setup. i went from 2.77 gears to 3.27s and used a 15/39 tooth combo drive/driven or whichever way that corresponds. my speedo was dead on. i'm still using the 15/39 setup with my 3.42 gears now. its only a few mph down once you get over 60ish mph

thanks for the replys guys...... i appreciate the help, orr89rocz, from what i here..... the driven gear is diferent from electric, and cable driven speedos, i have the correct match for the ratio but my car's speedo is cable driven and the donor car was electric speedo, the tooth counts are right but the actuall gear wont fit in my tail housing, i think i'm gonna start lookin at the v-6 cars for the 3.23/3.27 ratios i think they have them, and i doubt gm would spend the extra $ to put an electric speedo in a crappy v6

I assume now that you got the speedo gears from the 89 TA donor car as well? I must have missed that information. That would explain why the drive gear is different then and why it wont fit. You could just buy a set of gears for it. i think i payed only 15 bucks for a drive/driven gear combo
