86 camaro- 89 firebird rear end
I have an 86 camaro z-28 with a busted up 10 bolt limited slip with 2.73 gears and drum brakes. I just purchased an australian 9 bolt out of a firebird with posi 3.27s and disc brakes for $100.00. Now i've heard wind that the swap needs to convert parts and im just trying to see what I need to do to make it fit before I start getting my hands dirty. Thanks- Jim
You should try to ge the proportioning valve and the parking brake cables for the 9-bolt. These two are the major items. The brake line fitting also may be different but no big deal. Otherwise it is a direct swap.

Yeah, the guy I bought the rear end off of said i might need to replace the porpotioning valve and it has the cables for the e-brake but one of them needs to be replaced because its broken. Thanks for the help!
The brake line will most likely be the same size. The only thirdgens that used a different size were the 82-83 models, they used sae instead of metric. If your nine bolt has the aluminum calipers, which it should if it's an 89, the best proportioning valve to use is the 1LE valve, part#14089496. You can buy them brand new from GMpartsdirect for about $70. This valve will give you the best stopping power to the rear calipers. You can run your existing valve for now, and it should work ok, but the 1LE valve works even better. Your master cylinder should work fine since you had drums originally, no need to swap that out.

Yeah, the 9 bolt has aluminum calipers, and i did some research on the proportion valve for the 89 rear disc and most of them are around $80. I plan to replace the rotors and pads anyway so i might as well get the 1LE proportioning valve so everything works to the best of its ability. Thanks for the information!
