Mechanical To Electronic Vehicle Speed - HOW?

Here's my question - with a T-56 swap it seems easiest to run an electronic speedo. What is required to convert the instrument panel to an electronic signal? Can you simply replace the old instrument cluster with a 1991/1992 cluster or is there more involved?

It depends on which T56 you're using. The aftermarket T56 will use the same mechanical or electronic speedo you have now. The LT1/LS1 T56 uses an electronic signal that is not compatible with the stock thirdgen computers. You need a signal converter to use one of those.

You live @ disney?!? Lucky dog...

Anyway, yeah, i know the T-56 from an F-body is electronic (and truth be told, my research has shown thats the unit to buy) but my point is - can I just buy a 1991-1992 instrument cluster and bolt it in (i.e. - is the vss wiring already in the car?) or would I have to wire the speedo to get the signal?

Y'see what I mean jelly bean?

I live 10 mins from Disneyland and have an annual pass.

I have a 96 T56 and a 91 instrument cluster in my 91 Camaro Z28, and no the signals were not compatible with each other. As I said, you need some kind of signal converter. I had my tailhousing machined by a friend to accept the stock 91 VSS.

I believe this is what you need but do a check in the ltx/lsx swap section. If you are bolting to a tpi or lt1 be sure and get the lt1 t56. The ls1 is not compatable without additional expense.

You car should have a cable driven speedometer. The two easiest options would be to remove the tail housing and have it modified to accept a cable driven speedometer or get the Cable X box from Abbott. The box will use the electric signal from the transmission to spin a motor that will turn the speedometer cable. They work well. I have one that I will be selling if you're interested in it.
