output shaft bearing
Hello everyone. I'm having a little trouble finding a part for the bird. I have an 86 trans am, 305 w/5 speed. I'm looking for an output shaft bearing, if thats even what it's called. It's in the tailshaft behind the rear tranny seal. I have the tailshaft removed and have everything I need to replace it except this bearing. No one had it at the local parts stores, but I'm wondering if I just described it wrong or called it the wrong thing. If someone could tell me where to find it, what the part is called, or even a part number would be great. Thanks.

Re: output shaft bearing
Its official name is "extension housing bushing".
Any transmission shop will have it. Good parts stores ought to. REAL parts stores, maybe not VatoZone and such.

Re: output shaft bearing
Well I finally found the seal and bushing in a kit together and they looked just like the old ones. So I installed the bearing and seal, got everything done and now the driveshaft won't slide in to the tailshaft. It stops dead at that bushing like its to small. I even tried tapping it in a little and as soon as I get it in there partially the driveshaft doesn't even want to turn it's so tight. Any ideas?

Re: output shaft bearing
Installing the bushing often throws up a little burr on it. It's just copper, so once the drive shaft gets forced through it once, it'll peel it off and be fine after that. Sometimes it takes a little persuasion to get it in the first time.
