Limited Slip or Not?
I got my eye on a 3.23 differential that is claimed to be a "posi" (limited slip). Is it possible to determine if this is a limited slip rear axle from pictures or not?

Isn't there supposed to be a clutch pack in there or something?
Any help would be appreciated.

Get the code off of the axle tube and that will tell you if it is or not.

I've been told by the previous owner that my rear is an open carrier but everytime I do a burnout or whatever, it leaves 2 marks on the road. Everytime.
Hopefully it is posi. Not having it sucks, lol! But like they said, run the ID numbers or tear into it and look for yourself.

If you can get a picture, with the cover off, where springs are visible inside the carrier, it's posi; you should see four (or 5?) springs, with ends same direction as the axles (inboard - to- outboard) loaded against plates so that the carrier torque is transmitted directly to the differential pinion gears that spline to the axle shaft.

Re: Limited Slip or Not?
(Should look like this inside). Yours is a disc rear in the picture, the stamp code on the inside passenger axle tube will tell you what year it came out of and the original ratio and whether it was a posi or open diff. Axle codes are posted in most chiltons and haynes repair manuals...Firebirds and Camaros had different codes. too many to list here, but get the code (first three digits) and post it here. Your ring gear will verify the ratio.
