oil pump, torque converter how to test?
1986 trans am 305 tpi 5.0 v8 automatic transmission
My car usually has a strange idle up n down up n down then settles once it warms up.
and recently wants to die unless i give it gas when i shift into reverse. Once i press on the gs beforre it dies it goes backwards kinda sluggish but it goes and doesnt die and allows me to shift into drive.
ive read up this might be my torque converter. is there a way to test or how much do you tihnk it will cost to replace?
also read soemthing about the oil pump might play a part.
any way to test any of this? or what do you guys think i should do?
i will check the transmission fluid level. it looks fresh n light red. but i laso noticed a small leak. so maybe the torque converter doesnt have enough fluid flowing through it??? maybe???
anyone want to lend some tips?

Neither of those is your problem. Your transmission would have to be hemorrhaging for a leak to be a problem, and if your car can go forward ok, then there's nothing wrong with the torque converter. If you had a problem with the oil pump you'd know it too as the engine ate itself.

Bobby, i think what youre experiencing is more likely engine related... I'd look towards the Idle Air Control motor in particular, from your description of the problem! : )
