86 T/A no comp can I use 700r4

I just bought an 86 T/A solid body with no rust tough to find here in new england, and for $400 I couldn't say no.
The car had a crate 350 carbed and the factory 700r4 with no computer hooked up harness has been chopped. The guy said it never shifted right and he didn't know why, Gee I wonder. Is there a stand alone computer I could use for the tranny or would it be easier to just get the conversion kit and throw in a th350, and if thats the case how do I deal with the speedo, not that it works now. Would I have to swap my gauges for an older cable driven speedo? Thanks for the help.

The only thing that the computer did was to control torque converter lockup. The wiring should be there if you look closely, unless he stripped it out completely. If it is not fixable, then you could use a GM vacuum switch to control TC lockup. The wiring inside the transmission will have to be modified (very simple) to make this work.
