SHAKING- Tranny, Rear End, Driveshaft?
Hi everyone.
I have a 92 RS Convert. 305 TBI 700R4 Auto Trans. All Stock w/ no mods.
I have searched and studied all threads in this forum regarding Vibrations. All very helpful.
The car had been sitting for about 4-5 months, like it does every winter. The other day I took it out for a ride to get the juices flowing.... due to a pending sale on the vehicle.... So im getting onto the highway, fine. 40mph-ok, 50 mph-ok, 60 mph-NOT ok. The car began shaking violently (not vibrating, but shaking). Not in the peddles, not in the dash, not in the steering wheel. It was coming from the seat right underneath me. When it shifted into Overdrive, that is when it started to shake. As soon as the car began shaking i would let off the throttle and it would stop instantly. Give a little throttle again, and would continue to shake right from where it left of. When in drive, it still does it ,but very gingerly.
At this point i'm thinking either transmision, rear end, tire balancing, or u joints. There are no mods on the car so that keeps alot of guessing out of the picture.
When driving during this same incident i was stopped at a light. I then took a mildly aggressive turn and when i accelerated into the turn, the tranny just whinned in first gear, looking for second. It finally settled into second slowly. (Note that i was in Overdrive.)
So i thought to myself it had to be the tranny. I brought the car to my mechanic to rule out u joints and wheel balancing. He advised me that it was my Transmission. I took the car to AAMCO. I described the problem to them and they test drove the car first. Before doing any testing they said it was probably a torque arm or the torque converter. He said the converter sometimes will cause a violent shake like the one i have. So in summation, my question is could a bad torque converter cause that much shaking? please note that i am describing a shake, not a vibration.
The car sits at AAMCO and i am still awaiting the diagnosis from them.
Thank You in advance for all your help.

Re: SHAKING- Tranny, Rear End, Driveshaft?
Id have to say TQ converter, its not the TQ arm, wouldnt make it shake, youmighthave tossed someting off balance, maybe check fly wheel maybe you knocked a weight of of it and its shaking, or something in the converter. Its not the rear or it would be making noise and always be there, low RPM nothing High RPM shaking, its sounds like a weight or a missing converter bolt. check your drive shaft too for dents or abend or if the weight is missing from it.

kjvail thanks for the reply. Driveshaft was inspected and appeared to be solid. I just heard from AAMCO. He told me that the tourque converter solenoid was bad, causing the torque converter to lock into gear at the wrong time, keeping it from going into the next gear. This of course explains the violent shaking. He is going to replace the solenoid, power flush the transmission, and give it six mile run...then we will see where I'm at. He quoted me 1100 for complete rebuild (parts and labor included) with guarantee IF that doesn't work.

Problem Solved! It was in fact the TC Solenoid. The tranny is tighter and stronger than it ever was before. Thank g*d it was that, because i really wasn't in a good financial position for a complete rebuild.
