Rear end help.

Hi this is my first thread.

I have an 82 comarro that is not even close to stock. Has a freshly rebuilt 327 engine with a 3 speed tranny in it. The tranny has a shift kit in it I drive about 55mph and my rpms are at 3500. The car was origianlly a v6 if that makes a differnce. Im going to change gears in my rear end (if i dont swap out the whole thing) and i know nothing about rear ends!!!

First question, what is your opinion on the gears that i have and what should i put in the rear end? I was thinking 3.42 or 3.23. I think the grears in there now are close to 4.11.

Secound question, What rear ends from what cars will just bolt right in if i decide to swap the whole thing. I was thinking that any 3rd gen rear end will fit the car but again, I have no qlue about rear ends.

And what are the stock gears that come in an 82 comarro.

Re: Rear end help.

ouch, 4.11s with a 3 spd...eeks. The only rear that will bolt right in is one from 3rd gen because of the torque arm mount. You can get any bolt in rear from a aftermarket company, but be prepared to spend 2200+ for it.

Most rears came with 2:73s, but the V6s had a lower ratios to give them more speed. But if can get a rear out of a higher v8 car, iroc/trans am, it will be a bolt in and most likly have 3.23s/3.42s

I thought a 4th gen rear end would fit a thirdgen? The rear suspensions are the same - please correct me if I'm wrong

Re: Rear end help.

Hey thanks for the info... Tomorrow im going to call around to our local salvage yards and see if i can pick up a rear end from an iroc that might have ben totaled or something. As long as it looks to be in decent condition, I might even pull the cover off to check the gears for wear and such..

Ill post how i made out and everthing later and ill have to get a pic of my car up on here. Just got a paintjob done last summer

BTW im new to the forum if you didnt notice

Sorry, I forgot to slap that in there. Yes they will fit, but I beleave they are 2 inchs wider then a 3rd gen. But yes, a 4th gen rear will bolt in.
