Who here has abused your 700r4 at the track and is still holding strong? I realize they need better internals and my buddy has been running a built one in his supercharged 80 malibu for about 3 years with no problems. Just wondering how much power guys have put behind them and how long they have lasted them.

Re: 700r4

My trans has run high 10 second et's behind a 383 and a 150 shot.
Typical et without spray is 12.10 with a 1.620 typical 60 foot time.
Best 60 foot time is 1.505. 700r4's are better than they are given credit for. If built right, they work well.

Re: 700r4

Sounds great. I can get a great deal on a newly rebuilt 700r4 with a shift kit out of a 92 firebird. I heard that the newer years was the better of the 700r4. I know the sunshell is the main weakpoint but how would the rest of the internals pan out. Do you think I would need to worry about the planetaries and sprag from this year? Do you think it would hold up if I dont run any nitrous with 400hp and torque?

Re: 700r4

You "should" be fine. 92 was a good year. If the trans was professionally built, it should have a new 29 element sprag. If the builder has been around the block, he was wise and installed a h/d aftermarket reaction shell. I have yet to see a 400 hp car break a 29 element sprag, or a 4 pinion gm planetary. My own car wore a rear planetary out at approx 235,000 miles.

Re: 700r4

The few 9 second transmissions I have out there all use the GM 29 elememt sprag, and the 4 pinion planetaries, and they never break any of this.

Re: 700r4

I picked up the 700r4 tonite. Its been sitting so its a little dirty but it did get fresh rebuild right after it was pulled. I paid $100

So far I see it seems to be the better version because it has the rainbow casting mark. Also I want to run a cable speedo but it looks to have an electronic speedo connection.

The markings I got from it says 8676358 and the pad has 1FTM172H. Still trying to Id what year it is but from the look I can tell its newer than 89. Any advice anyone has to offer would be great. I think it might be a 1991 model.

Re: 700r4

Dans87GTA is running my original 700r4. It was rebuilt by a buddy of mine and lasted him a year or two before he hurt the rear planetary, mostly caused by violent shift firmness. - I since built it myself and he hits the track on Mickey Dr's whenever he gets the chance, still doing good after a year. - daily(only) driver

beast reaction shell
5 pinion rear planet
billet intermediate servo
superior shift correction kit
raybestos(mostly) clutches w/ thick 3-4 steels(clutch packs wear mix-in-match from stuff I had)

I've got one running well in a 4wd tahoe with 35" tires and a built 355 TPI vortec for over 2 years now. Another with just about every internal upgrade available behind a 454 with a 871 blower in a 81 pick-up with a tq arm suspension and 29x18.5 hoosiers that hangs the front in the breezy everytime its driven.
