84 Firebird Transmission advice?

I have an 84 Firebird 2.8 V6 2bbl automatic with overdrive. So I think I have the 700r4 transmission. Correct so far? It has 135K on it, I have no records of what has been done to it. I want to change the Trans Fluid and filter. Like the engine I would like to use Royal Purple fluid. Can you see any problem in doing so? I just want to give it good care. Thanks

Re: 84 Firebird Transmission advice?

if its automatic trans then yes its the 700r4

its a gamble

change the filter and fill with new fluid and see what happens

thats really all you can do

how is the fluid now ?

does it smell like anything other than good tranny fluid ?

is it dark maroon or worse ?

if it were mine i would probably not mix in something crazy like purple unless i knew for sure that it has been changed on time all its life

if not then play safe and go with regular dextron mercon III

most 700r4 were lucky to see 130k or more

some will and do last longer though,
now and then

good luck

Re: 84 Firebird Transmission advice?

The fluid looks healthy, not too dark, doesn't have a burnt smell. Drives and shifts as it should. I just want to make sure I am doing what I can to take care of it. So these transmissions are not known for going high mileage? What sort of problems are common? But I don't know if it has ever had work done on it. Maybe after pulling the trans pan I will know more about it's internal condition. Anything I should look for in particular?

Re: 84 Firebird Transmission advice?

That's if you remove the transmission and dump the torque converter...
