High gear or overdrive problem?

I am not sure what to search under. When i am at cruising speed in either D3 or OD (5.7 TPI w/ auto) and I let off the throttle, rather than stay at 2000 or less rpm (about 2000 rpm at about 55 mph in D3 and about 1500 rpm at same speed in OD)until I step on the gas again, the rpms drop about 300 rpm or so for a minute then go back up again ... almost like it is going into neutral and then back into gear again. Any ideas?

Thanks
