91 VSS Gear loose?
I am reviving my old B4C from being off the road for nine years. Once I got the engine started the speedo was dead. I replaced the VSS and it didn't work. Took it off, spun the shaft with a drill and it kicked up the speedo. Put it back together and it worked fine...Drove it about a week and today it jumped a couple of times and went dead. The gears are both red and look fine, no chips or anything. The gear onto the VSS slides on very loosely, is it supposed to be snug? I am wondering if it is coming loose causing my problems. Anyone have a similar issue?

Is this thing on? I never get any replies LOL.
Well, it worked fine going home, still working today. I'll see what happens with it...no idea why it cut out.

Figured I'd make ya feel more loved with a reply to your post. Lol. Seriously though, I doubt that's your problem. As long as the d-shaped hole in the gear isn't rounded out, and the two gears are meshing properly, then you're probably ok. It sounds more like the VSS unit itself is getting flaky, or one of the two wires has a bad spot in it.
