T5 and T56 tailshaft, anyone got pix?

Anyone got pix of T5 and T56 tailshaft side by side?

I'm curious if the bolt spacing is similar for the torque arm + such.

Thanks!

Here's a couple from my archives... not the greatest, but I think they'll answer the question you appear to be asking....

Thanks. Yeah, i'm working with a company that makes adapters for T56 transmission, and i'm trying to get him to make one for a T5..

He wanted some pictures, but i'll have to send him a T5 tailshaft soon too.

Hmmmm.... looks like there are some other potential issues besides just the bolt pattern; such as the general features of the casting, that the adapter wants to clamp to... yeah it probably would be best to supply a tail housing.

If your question is...."does the torque arm mount bolt to the t-56"...yes it does.

Yeah I figured the bolt pattern was the same, but the offset is whats gonna be the killer. The tailshaft on the T5 appears to be rotated 18* to counter the bell housings rotation. Mounted in a vette it will be 'straight up'.

Agreed. I'll have to get one out to him early this week. Shouldn't be too hard to make the adapter work since you use the driveshaft yoke centerline as a basis.

Re: T5 and T56 tailshaft, anyone got pix?

That's part of what I was referring to about the case details.

The torque arm mount is in the same relation to the trans mount (which is of course dead horizontal) in both the T-5 and T-56; but lots of those other little details AREN'T.

So from what I see of that adapter setup, it doesn't look to me like it will bolt to a T-5; even though the TA stuff itself is the same. That uses more than just the TA pad.

Doesn't look like it would take a whole lot to re-engineer it a bit to accommodate a T-5, even though it clearly won't as it now exists. Not an unreasonable or out-of-reach pursuit or anything.

Agreed. Shouldn't take him too long with the tail shaft to re-engineer it.
He's happy too, because as I explained to him, it would be much cheaper to replace a crappy muncie 4+3 with a T5 (same bell housing), than a T56.

A lot of folks rag on the T5. I've had good luck over the years. When I switched over to the vette, and realized what THEY got for a transmission I almost switched back.. Now I kinda am

Thanks!

Hey Joe. So are you ditching the 700r4 in your Vette for a T5? I remember your post a while back about getting a hole in the bellhousing of the 700r4. I also remember you saying how mushy the 700r4 felt in comparison to your old manual setup. Seems like you have had better luck when you were using a T5.

Well, more of a grind through. Something caught the flexplate cuz I didn't have a dust cover on, and scratched a 3/4" long by 1/8" area. It didn't ruin it, but lesson learned. I think it was a piece of hanger I picked up in teh parking lot in front of my shop. I heard "scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaape" and I shut it off, and pushed the car on the lift. At first I thought flexplate or converter broke and something came through, but then I pulled it out and it was like a clothes hanger or something.. (see picture)

Yeah. I hate it. I sold my converter to a member last week, and we had a nice conversation over the phone about it. I just hate it. I gave it a whirl. couldn't even make it through the summer. Between the 700R4 and the too-big for my rear-end cam, I hate driving the car.

Re: T5 and T56 tailshaft, anyone got pix?

Is it safe to assume a V6 T5 and V8 T5 are dimensionally the same? I.e, I have v6 T5 at my disposal. can I measure from the front of the trans where it mates the bell housing to the end of the tail shaft, record that measurement, and remove the tail shaft and ship it to him and assume it will be the same as the V8 T5?

Thanks!

Yes they are the same externally. The only difference, from outside the case, is the splines and diameter of the clutch gear.

Ok great. I don't have a V8 t5 yet, looking for one, but my buddy has a blown V6 one I was gonna take the tailshaft off and fedex this guy.

Thanks again!
