700r4 or th350 behind 454 BB

i was just wondering you guys suggestions about what i should put behind a 454. a 700r4 or a th350. of course i already have the 700r4 but i can also get a th350 pretty cheap as you all know. so basically which one would you use? i would have to build the snot out of a 700r4 and to handle a 454 correct? on the other hand the th350 wouldnt need to be built as much i would think. gas milage isnt a concern so i dont care about overdrive. this car is going to run a lot at the strip but it will also see a good amount of street time. the th350 would be cheaper in the long run wouldnt it? any insight or help would be great thanxs guys.

Because gas is over $3 per gallon, I personally would never run a non overdrive trans in a street driven car.

gas isnt over $3 a gallon here and also when i said that it would see i good amount of street time i meant compared to strip time and overall drive time. this is in no way going to be a daily driver more of a weekend car when the weather is nice.

Both transmissions are considered weak behind anything other than a stock engine. Consider putting in a TH400 first.

if those are your only choices available then you'll want the 350 over the 700. the 350 can handle up to 600 HP with minor upgrades whereas the 700 will require some serious money to reach these levels. there is a forum on nastyz28.com on how to build the 350 for top power levels.

thanxs for the input on the 400 stephen but i was trying to stay away from that tranny becuase of how much heavier i hear they are. i already have the extra weight of the bb so i was trying to keep everythink else as light as possible. Do you think a properly built and upgraded 350 will be ok? and duckmanquacker would you go for the 400 too or do you think that the 350 will be ok? i want to have atleast but maybe more than 500hp and 500ftlbs. thanxs you guys

A 350 will work fine if properly built. I ran a 350 with a 3500 stall behind my 454 in a 68 Nova. The car ran high 11's and I drove it to and from the track, around town and picked up groceries every now and then.

Sounds like you are swaying toward the 350. I gave you my opinion, the choice is yours. Both can hold up well, and both could break on the same pass. Gm considered them both a medium duty trans. Aftermarket is full of upgraded parts as well.

well I curently have a 468 ci with 525 hp 575 torque mated to a fairly stock th350 which moves about 10k lbs daily, no worries.
