rears?

i have an 87 trans am with a 305 tpi, i am not sure what kind of rear end gearing do i have? its totally stock, what is the gearing? also what would be a good gearing ratio for a daily driver car that i normally have on the highway? something for a little bit better of a take off and still get good gas mileage?

thanks

Re: rears?

Here's how to determinne what ratio the rear is (jerk the diff cover and look): numbers are stamped on the ring and pinion:

41 : 15 = 2.73
41 : 14 = 2.93
40 : 13 = 3.08
42 : 13 = 3.23
41 : 12 = 3.42
41 : 11 = 3.73

I like 3.23's for an "all around" gear.
