WTF?? th350 turbo or 700r4??

Hey guys, I have come by a troubling discovery recently. When I bought my car last year, before starting restoration, the owner indicated that the tranny was a newly rebuilt th350 turbo. Newly rebuilt I'll agree with, but when i took the transmission pan and filter off, I noticed the gasket and filter came nowhere close to that of a th350, but was a perfect match with 700r4's components.

I only drove it for a month before tearing her apart but I could of sworn I was only getting three speeds out of the damn thing.

So is it possible that the guy simply used 700r4 components/shell and installed th350 turbo gears?

No.

More likely, 4th just doesn't work.

Ok, impossible theory huh? And no, most likely, I've never noticed the 4th gear shift. I could of sworn though. The car climbed over 210 km/hr (131+mph) very quickly the few times I pushed her before the rattling got too bad due to bad tire balance. Don't think a tranny with a bad 4th could really do that, lol.

Just very strange, don't get why a guy would lie about having a th350 turbo over a 700r4. Oh well, was happy with the power it gave.

Autos dont really have 'gears' . There are some in there but its a world away from what you think. If the pan square its a 700R4, if its got an angle on one corner its a TH350. Heres a link to ID it. http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-transm...tification.php . Plus you gear indicator will be off if its had the TH350 swap.

don't get why a guy would lie
Hmmmm.....

Note that I stopped quoting right there. The question of the details of what somebody would lie ABOUT, are kind of irrelevant. Kind of like when somebody does something dumb and screws up something expensive that belongs to you and says to you "I didn't think that blah blah blah blah" do you give a rip what it was they didn't think about? No.... the fact that they didn't think, pretty much says it all. They could just stop right there, because they're done. The rest is just diarrhea of the mouth. Same here.

Now I'm kind of stupid and all; (no, make that EXTREMELY stupid, like some kind of an imbecile actually) but I can tell you, in all the many decades I've been on this planet, I've learned that WHENEVER used cars are involved, ANY resemblance of what the seller is saying to "truth", is purely accident or coincidence.

So to answer the question about "why" the guy lied, I'd guess it was the usual used-car situation. Namely, he KNEW the trans didn't work right (couldn't feel the 4th gear shift), and instead of admitting the truth and taking a hit on the price, told you what he thought you'd want to hear as an "explanation", hoping you wouldn't be sufficiently informed to know the difference and would buy the car at the price he was looking to get.

Best thing to do now is identify the trans, just get up under the car and look at the pan. Do that, then you'll know what you've REALLY got (i'd almost bet money it's a 700) and therefore how it's supposed to act, and go from there.

Re: WTF?? th350 turbo or 700r4??

Yup, if it's impossible to put a th350 core in another shell, it's definitely a 700r4. All components are the same, Gasket, filter, and looking from up where the pan is removed looks exactly like the 700r4 pics on the net, not like a th350.

So now I know I have a 700r4. Damn... this is going to torture me, I'm restoring the damn car and it'll be months before it's ready. I'll always have that question nagging in my mind. Will it have a fourth gear, or is it ****ed, lol. I'll have to wait and see.

Oh well, either it works or I'll have an excuse for myself to buy a tranny of my choice then.

Thanks guys.

Good Luck. If its a resto, then it should have a 700R4 anyways. As far as it not going into 4th...well I hope it is and you just missed it. Otherwise you might need a rebuild.
