Rebuilding my 700R4 - What do I ask for

I am rebuilding my 700R4 and I have about $1600 to spend.

What should I be asking the trans shop to be putting into it.

Corvette servos? Stall? etc..

Need advice.

Engine is a stock 305 TPI with a LT1 cam swap.

Will be putting in a 383 TPI in a few years.....hopefully

Thanks

if your lookin to make decent power, i'd go ahead and get like a street strip transmission. (extra clutches, heavy duty "torque-drive" input shaft/drum, etc.) and i'd go with a good convertor company and get a street strip low stall around 2600-3000 stall convertor. Transmission specialties has a great piece, thats what in my car and never had any trouble.

Re: Rebuilding my 700R4 - What do I ask for

I would get a shift improver/correction kit. Only the Superior or TransGo (ProBuilt version). Get the 3-4 clutch pack improved. Stock it a 5 or 6 pack and you need a 7, 8 or 9 kit depending on use. The corrector kits will help out the 3-4 engagement/disengagement and the better pack will help this problem area as well. Alto Red Eagle, Borg-Warner Hi Energy or Raybestos Z-Pack are recomended. Upgrade the sunshell to the Beast model. This also is a prolem area to address now. They are about $50 and arent ncluded as a regular rebuild. Get a hi-po 2-4 band and NOT a relined part. Corvette servo is the 2nd apply. The servo has 2 parts, the 2nd and 4th apply. Upgrading the 2nd to a Vette servo is cheap and a good upgrade. You can get a billet servo but htye are more pricey. The 4th servo there isnt a OEM upgrade for, but there are billet ones. The 4th isnt needed unless you are towing in 4th. As far as the rest of the clutch packs (forward, reverse, over run and lo-rev), standard Borg-Warner or Raybestos are fine. The Superior 700-R4 HP kit comes with a Vette Servo, correction and improving parts and a .471 TV Boost Valve. For $89 its a good deal. Also you can get an upgraded Lo-Rev Boost valve so you can hold manual 1st and 2nd. Plus it increases the line pressure in low gears for a better hold. If you want it all, ProBuilt sells entire rebuild kits with almost everything you need. Including the Hi-Po 2-4 Band, 3-4 Upgrade Clutch/Steel pack, all other clutches, Lo-Rev and TV Boost valves, pump upgrades, Beast sunshell, upgraded Sprag (another problem area correction), TransGo kit, servo, seperator plate, all gaskets/seals/bearings/thrust washers/torrington bearings.....pretty much the whole nine. They are tailored for upgrading, strengthening, specific for your useage and well thought out.
Most shops charge $900-up to rebuild. They dont fix alot of these things, usually use genero stuff and 'make' a shift kit. SUCKS!!
I would contact a good reputable builder, ask how much if you provide the kit as above. The entire shebang is like $600-$800 plus a converter if you need one. So, you have quite a bit in your budget left IMO
