GM 10 Bolt Cone Problems
I recently had a friend who rebuilt his GM 10 Bolt and I tore my diff apart and found a similar problem. I completely tore down the diff which has a 7 5/8 ring gear that has 13:42 gears.. I believe that is a 3.23 ratio... Before I go out and order all the new bearing and races and seals. I found that both cones in the Limited Slip area have shifted and are probably bad. I would like to replace these during the rebuild. I have searched high and low and no-one at a parts store can locate these, and the dealership says that they are obsolete parts so they can no longer help. Any help would be appreciated on where I can find these or do I have to by a new center section?

Re: GM 10 Bolt Cone Problems
That is correct; Auburn (the maker of the unit) hasn't supplied service parts for well over a decade now. The only hoppe you'd have of finding any, is if some dealership has some somewhere in a back room off the record, and they suddenly get unearthed.
That's not a very good unit anyway. It's just an Auburn, and the weeniest one of those, at that.
A better way to go would be to locate a Zexel Torsen out of a 98-up Z28 or TransAm; or, buy an Eaton (a real one, NOT a Gov-Lock, of course...).

Re: GM 10 Bolt Cone Problems
I have my order all ready for Jegs now. I did find that because of the TPIS miniram, They recommend that I change the rear gear ratio's at from 3:23 to 3:73 anyway.. Here is what I am going to order as of now.
19599-010 EATON Carrier for $ 519.95
4900461 RICHMOND 3.73 for $197.99
836-83-1044-1 Bearing Kit for $101.99
This should wake up my power plant a little.
Thanks for the help

Check on Ebay for an Eaton unit before you fork over $520 at Summit. You can usually find the Eaton 7.625" posi units on there brand new for about $100-$150 cheaper.

Re: GM 10 Bolt Cone Problems
I am also exploring another possiblitity. I already know that the 10 bolt is basically a cheap unit that won't hold up to the power that I am putting down. I would like to find out all alternatives that I have available. If I had the money I would go right out and spend 2 - 3 thousand and get a new crated diff with strange axles, but unfortunetly all my extra money currently is being tied up buying transmission stuff and I still have to spend about another $1000 next week on the engine to get the balancer and flexplate. So this is been kinda costly.
Is there another rear end out with rear disc, that would be strong enough that I could buy or search for through a salage yard and buy all the right carrier and bearing installation kit that would be better or recommended than what I have, and what years and vehicle type would be recommended?
