700R4 Dipsick Removal?

Hi Guy’s,

Ok in the continuing saga of my engine removal, I’ve managed to get the torque arm off and I’ve got the three drivers side bell housing bolts off and the one lower passenger side one. If I can remove the transmission dipstick tube I can get the last two bolts from the area vacated by the old front exhaust and starter motor. My question is, in the manual (Haynes) it say’s to release the tube via the upper bolt?
I’ve looked for a bolt but can’t find one that it’s attached to. I’ve given it an half hearted tug to no avail. Should I prise the bottom of it out or is there some other way of getting it out? If I can remove this I’ll have got all six bolts out with relative ease! I've done a search but only come up with the engine dipstick, typical!

Speed.

the dipstick is secured by one of the bellhousing bolts on the upper passenger side.Remove that bolt from the top of the car,and pull up on it,should slide right out

got a pic of your engine?

Would be nice to know whats in the way. If your AC equipped, its not gonna be fun, but a wrench is ur freind.

Are you trying to remove your engine or your tranny?
If you ARE AC equipped, id try going in from the driver side of the engine, it may help to remove the distributor.

Or try going in from above, or below, you may be able to squeeze in there. Having the hood off always helps.

There only ONE bolt that holds the dipstick on, its close to the top of the tube, you should be able to find it by following the tube with ur hands.

You can tell if its bolted, by trying to move the tube side to side, or back and forth, The dipstick tube is really easy to move around if its unbolted, it should not move if it IS bolted.

If you already have the torque arm and driveshaft out, you can remove the tranny crossmember and allow the tranny to tilt down. With tranny tilted, you can get to all 6 eng-tranny bolts easily with a loooong extension and a 9/16" wobble socket.
If you use this method, make sure the dist cap is removed cause it can hit the firewall. Eng driven fans can hit the shroud too if you have one.

Re: 700R4 Dipsick Removal?

if you remove the tranny first that tube will be alot easier to get out. Just take all 6 bolts off the housing and disconnect the trans lines along with all the other fitting on the tranny....That tube is a pain to get out and just wait til you have to put it back in.
Its not as easy as you think. that tube will not just slide out....cause of the way its shaped and also cause of the little bracket that the bolt goes thru.

trust me I know..Ive removed my engine and tranny about 6 times since July.

edit: I just read you engine stats under you name..I dont know what size motor you working with. My advice is for a V8 700r4 combo
